In response to the court case in Hong Kong, in which a male-to-female trans-woman attempts to fight for her right of getting married to a man, and to the Gay Pride last weekend, Simon’s part drew into a handful of songs that shatter the boundary of gender.

and a brief recap of Osheaga – particularly the Pavement set where someone threw a beer at Malkmus.

Apologies for the technical issues: the podcast recording has been down for a couple of weeks, due to factors beyond our control. Everything seems to be back in order, though!

Consider the following picture: The Hong Kong Marriage Registration & Records Office recently refused to grant registration to a pair of couple . Why? Because the female is/was (depends how you look at it) a transgender. Anyone can see that it’s a wrong picture. Not that the government is discrimminating (or so it says) against transgenders – it IS legal to undergo gender surgery in Hong Kong – but that marriage involves much more than a change of HKID since her birth certificate still states that she is a ‘male’. So…marriage involves one piece of ID and not the other? If we use the definition provided by experts in the field, sex is mainly a biological construction (i.e. your sex is determined by your breasts, penis or vagina) while gender is a social construction (i.e. one’s feminity or masculinity is define by social customs). The transgender woman in question is a female that possesses mainly feminine characteristics by definition, so technically, she should enjoy the same rights as a woman who is marrying a man in Hong Kong. What is at the heart of the problem though, is not this particular ruling of the Hong Kong marriage registry, but contradicting laws within the legal system – how can you allow someone be who he/she really feels like and yet deny her of other rights the minute after?

I’m sure everyone who has experienced a 10-hour layover has had this question in mind: WHERE TO SLEEP? A recent poll has this figured out for you lazy bums. Top ten comfy airports include the Singapore Changi International Airport, Seoul Incheon International Airport and the Hong Kong International Airport. Even though Vancouver didn’t make the list, it still tops other airports in North America.

Despite being denied and deleted shortly afterwards, I’m sure everyone has heard of the news by now. A Montreal nightclub recently sent out an invitation with the line ‘No fat girls allowed’. Gasps. Do I have to weigh and humiliate myself in front of everyone on the streets now? Can you ignore the few extra pounds around my waist if I put on a skimpy-enough outift? After all, that’s what they used to only demand of girls.
